Nick has been passionate about nature, particularly birds for his entire life. After spending 13 years in the Royal Australian Air Force, he left and worked as an international birdwatching tour guide while studying ecology. This eventually led to a PhD on the Night Parrot at UQ, starting in 2016. This project has naturally lead to a particular interest in understanding how to detect rare species and assess their status at the landscape scale, particularly using acoustic monitoring. Nick is also a member of the Night Parrot Recovery Team, works closely with Bush Heritage Australia on management at Pullen Pullen Reserve for the population of Night Parrots there, and is also involved with several indigenous ranger groups in Western Australia, helping them search for Night Parrots on their country. He is also involved in all of the lab’s other projects, including research into the Buff-breasted Button-quail, Carpentarian Grasswren, Red Goshawk and Northern Masked Owl.
